First Nordic restaurant in Tbilisi was opened on Lado Asatiani Street, in Sololaki. Besides high quality food and sophisticated environment, this place differs from the others with its interior, which was designed by young architect and founder of IDAAF Nanuka Zaalishvili with natural materials.
“In the beginning, me and customers both thought about traditional Nordic design, but with the place came new different ideas. When the walls were free from patched layer, we found authentic bricks of this historic building, which were restored and left like that. The setting was so warm and cozy that we changed our minds about using any décor or white color on walls.” says author while talking about project.
Restaurant Stampesoe is located on three different levels. -1 is entirely occupied by kitchen, on the ground level drinks and other products are displayed, which you can enjoy in the restaurant located on third, mezzanine level. This idea belongs to founders and chefs of Stampesoe. They didn’t want this place to be just for eating, they had an idea to offer customers handmade natural products. This is why on the ground level, 45 sq.m. Only are the counter and the drinks and products displayed on wooden shelves. With this the place gained more diversity and it is sort of fun for guests to view all this.
Restaurant’s interior is a combination of wood, brick and metal, which has proven to be commonly used and topical method, while working with interior. In fact there is no décor, not including plants on window sills and three watercolor painting with leaves on them. Leaves also are main details of Stampesoe logo. Exceptionally noteworthy is the floor on ground and mezzanine level, which is made from hundred years old conifer material.
“These unique wooden logs were found while deconstructing old factory building, they were part of its construction. We took them and processed as flooring materials.”
Everything is simple, details are not heavy with décor only the counter is distinctive, which is the unity of rectangular shapes and makes interesting composition. As the architect says the focus should be on the food and not the interior, this is why everything is simple and minimalist, which was possible by the place. Toilet sink was made by “White Studio” and the chairs and lighting wooden nests belong to studio “In House” girls.
Electrical wiring is made in old style. Black decorative wires and ceramic isolations are placed above the wall, so all this “map” is visible for visitors. Railings, which are attached externally on mezzanine floor and thus make the space little bit wider, are black too. It’s notable that there is no décor on mezzanine, only the furniture.
We asked designer few questions:
How long are you working in this field?
It’s been couple of years since I’m working in architecture, I began as a bachelor student. However I’m still in the process of “Architect’s early stage” and I don’t think about any of my works seriously. As for the interior, “Stampesoe” is my first serious experience where I’m both the manager and the supervisor. I had to think about many details and it was great experience for me.
What are you working on right now?
I’m working wholly on IDAAF projects; lately I’m interested in social themes, which will change city’s appearance for better, especially in suburbs. I’ve got couple of private orders in interior and architect design, let’s see what will come out of it.
What IDAAF projects are you talking about?
Team of IDAAF as non-governmental organization wants to rehabilitate parks in suburbs and also to fix couple of urban-landscape knots. Projects are in the process of making, and when it will begin we’ll definitely write about and discuss it.
What is the main goal of the architect and what is a good architecture?
It is a very complex issue and hard to answer. I think, architect should bring comfort and aesthetic beauty. When someone asks about my profession, I can’t answer that I’m an architect, because I think that it’s a great responsibility for me to take yet. Sometimes they don’t see it but many important things are depending on the architect, and you should take this job with great seriousness and knowledge. Architecture is power; lifestyle, direction and possibility to survive in specific environment is depending on it.
